„Aš jau buvau, aš jau buvau,
todėl aš būtinai dar būsiu
pasikartojimų mene,
toj maišaty neišnykimo,
jūs vėl mylėsite mane,
ir aš nerūstinsiu likimo.“

Iš Violetos Palčinskaitės eilėraščio be pavadinimo rinktinėje „Aukštoje žolėje“ („Tyto alba“, 2026).

„And Yet the Books

And yet the books will be there on the shelves, separate beings,
That appeared once, still wet
As shining chestnuts under a tree in autumn,
And, touched, coddled, began to live
In spite of fires on the horizon, castles blown up,
Tribes on the march, planets in motion.
“We are,” they said, even as their pages
Were being torn out, or a buzzing flame
Licked away their letters. So much more durable
Than we are, whose frail warmth
Cools down with memory, disperses, perishes.
I imagine the earth when I am no more:
Nothing happens, no loss, it’s still a strange pageant,
Women’s dresses, dewy lilacs, a song in the valley.
Yet the books will be there on the shelves, well born,
Derived from people, but also from radiance, heights.

Berkeley, 1986

„Sometimes by Sheenagh Pugh
<...>

Sometimes things don’t go, after all,
from bad to worse. Some years, muscadel
faces down frost; green thrives; the crops don’t fail.
Sometimes a man aims high, and all goes well.

A people sometimes will step back from war,
elect an honest man, decide they care
enough, that they can’t leave some stranger poor.
Some men become what they were born for.

Sometimes our best intentions do not go
amiss; sometimes we do as we meant to.
The sun will sometimes melt a field of sorrow
that seemed hard frozen; may it happen for you.“

„Child

by Sylvia Plath

Your clear eye is the one absolutely beautiful thing.
I want to fill it with color and ducks,
The zoo of the new

Whose names you meditate —
April snowdrop, Indian pipe,
Little

Stalk without wrinkle,
Pool in which images
Should be grand and classical

Not this troublous
Wringing of hands, this dark
Ceiling without a star. “

„Snow
Louis MacNeice

The room was suddenly rich and the great bay-window was
Spawning snow and pink roses against it
Soundlessly collateral and incompatible:
World is suddener than we fancy it.

World is crazier and more of it than we think,
Incorrigibly plural. I peel and portion
A tangerine and spit the pips and feel
The drunkenness of things being various.

And the fire flames with a bubbling sound for world
Is more spiteful and gay than one supposes—
On the tongue on the eyes on the ears in the palms of one’s hands—
There is more than glass between the snow and the huge roses.“

„Elizabeth Jennings

Delay

The radiance of the star that leans on me
Was shining years ago. The light that now
Glitters up there my eyes may never see,
And so the time lag teases me with how

Love that loves now may not reach me until
Its first desire is spent. The star’s impulse
Must wait for eyes to claim it beautiful
And love arrived may find us somewhere else.“

„William Butler Yeats

Her Anxiety

Earth in beauty dressed
Awaits returning spring.
All true love must die,
Alter at the best
Into some lesser thing.
Prove that I lie.

Such body lovers have,
Such exacting breath,
That they touch or sigh.
Every touch they give,
Love is nearer death.
Prove that I lie.“

„Idyll, U.A. Fanthorpe

Not knowing even that we’re on the way,
Until suddenly we’re there. How shall we know?

There will be blackbirds, in a late March evening,
Blur of woodsmoke, whisky in grand glasses,

A poem of yours, waiting to be read; and one of mine;
A reflective bitch, a cat materialised

On a knee. All fears of present anf future
Will be over, all guilts forgiven.

Maybe, heaven. Or maybe
We can get so far in this world. I’ll believe we can.“

G o d S a y s Y e s T o M e
I asked God if it was okay to be melodramatic
and she said yes
I asked her if it was okay to be short
and she said it sure is
I asked her if I could wear nail polish
or not wear nail polish
and she said honey
she calls me that sometimes
she said you can do just exactly
what you want to
Thanks God I said
And is it even okay if I don’t paragraph
my letters
Sweetcakes God said
who knows where she picked that up
what I’m telling you is
Yes Yes Yes

„Tu nesvarstyk:
“Gerai? Negerai?”-
Ir man vienąsyk
Pabėgo žirgai.

Ir aš vieną kart
Paklydau nakty…
Ar girti, ar barti-
Tesprendžia kiti.

O Tu patikėk
Birželio tiesa
O Tu patylėk,
Kai krinta rasa.

Tiktai nesvarstyk:
“Gerai? Negerai?”-
Visiems vienąsyk
Pabėga žirgai…

„MATTHEW DICKMAN

BRAŠKINIS MĖNULIS

Atrodė, jog visas pasaulis
iškvėpė išties greitai, lyg kas būtų
smogęs į pilvą.
Kiekviena daina buvo apie tave.
Nejuokauju. Visai
kaip išties prastose dainose, o dabar
nebegaliu klausytis nieko,
nes esu kaip pūkuota kamanė,
atšokanti nuo visų šių kuokelių,
spustelinti juos drėgnu
smakru ir apsimetanti,
jog tai tavo pilvas, medus, mieloji,
atrodo, jog niekada
nebebūsiu OK, o vasara
bet kuriuo atveju artėja.
Vasara nužvelgia mane,
papurto galvą
ir taria, pizdon tave,
turėjai tam pasiruošti,
turėjai būti
tėvu, bet dabar esi lyg
skardinė šunų maisto, ir susijaudinę
yra tik šunys,
o tu ir aš žinome – taip yra
tik todėl, kad jie nesupranta,
tik todėl, kad jie augintiniai
ir yra mušti
dienraščiu, kurį yra
išmokyti parnešti į vidų
ir padėti prie didelių beplaukių
šeimininkų kojų. Gulkis. Gulėk.
Tenorėjau, kad kada nors lieptum man
sėdėti. O dabar mirsiu
ant veido, jis tiesiog nesugeba
to suprasti, kvailas žvėris, žuvęs, bet
iš tikrųjų nė nenumanantis, jog jo nebėra.“

Philip Larkin

„The Mower

The mower stalled, twice; kneeling, I found
A hedgehog jammed up against the blades,
Killed. It had been in the long grass.

I had seen it before, and even fed it, once.
Now I had mauled its unobtrusive world
Unmendably. Burial was no help:

Next morning I got up and it did not.
The first day after a death, the new absence
Is always the same; we should be careful

Of each other, we should be kind
While there is still time.“
